An Itinerary Guide
- Introductions and health & safety briefing (risk assessments are completed for each session).
- Discuss the different species of fish that we will be catching; the equipment and bait that you will be using and most importantly tuning your brain into thinking how fish behave and feed in the water.
- There will be several different fishing rods and poles already assembled. Everybody is an individual, therefore by having a good selection I should find one that you find most comfortable to fish with.
- We will be targeting smaller species such as Gudgeon, Roach, Rudd & Perch. This enables you to practice core angling skills such as: Rig Control, Bite Recognition, Hooking a Fish, Playing a Fish, Landing a fish, Unhooking a Fish and most importantly Handling a Fish.
I prefer Rod & Reel fishing techniques because it is more challenging and thrilling than using an elasticated fishing pole. The direct contact with your senses; feeling the power of a fish through a quality carbon rod hooped over on the skyline is far superior than the dulled sensation of playing a fish through a stretched piece of pole elastic. A personal opinion only; but nonetheless encapsulates the whole spirit of angling using light balanced fishing tackle to fully appreciate the experience of playing a hooked fish.
However, I'm an active club competition angler and as such am fully aware of the precision and finesse pole fishing provides an angler. There is simply no better way to present a bait to a freshwater fish than via a pole fishing set up.
Therefore I also offer basic pole fishing skills utilizing a 6 metre margin pole.
I will try and give you a taster of both rod / reel and pole fishing disciplines depending upon how the fish are feeding on the day.

I'm sorry for the grainy quality of this photo, however I just had to share this priceless memory with you.
The year was 1978, my very first fish of any size. This particular fish is still the largest Roach I have caught to date, weighing approximately 2lb 0oz. I was a nine year old boy who lived and played near the Rochdale Canal.
All of my friends bought fishing rods during the Summer of 1977 and we set about catching our first fish. Needless to say we all failed miserably due to our total lack of experience! The following Spring a kind fisherman took me under his wing and shown me a few basics. The very next week I caught my first fish, a small Brown Trout. An historical event for me, man may have walked on the moon for the first time not that many years before but during the Spring of 1978 AN ANGLER WAS BORN!

Activity Q & A's
1:1 or Group Coaching? All of Manchester Angler coaching sessions are 1:1. However, I am happy for 'Fishing Taster Sessions' to be shared between two children / adults. I must highlight that only one fishing rod will be used at any one time; therefore whilst one is fishing the other participant will be watching!
Suitability? For anybody aged 7 years old right through to active retired adults who are as only old as they feel!.
You do not need to have had any previous fishing experience, this activity has been created for people who have never held a fishing rod in their lives.
PLEASE NOTE: Children between the age of 7 and 16 Must be accompanied by a carer or parent. Can people with physical restrictions or learning difficulties take part in this activity?
I strive to make fishing available to EVERYONE. Therefore if parents or carers wish to contact me to discuss how we can tailor the activity to facilitate the needs of a specific condition then please do so.
I'm proud to state that Manchester Angler will do its utmost to ensure our services are accessible to all members of our community.
Are spectators allowed? I encourage friends and family to enjoy angling with the participant during the coaching session - However there is a MAXIMUM OF TWO SPECTATORS during 'Fishing Taster Sessions' packages! Unfortunately I only have one comfortable chair available for a spectator.
What is included within the package?
We use high quality balanced fishing equipment to enhance the enjoyment of hooking and playing a hooked fish. All the fishing bait is supplied along with a fishing permit and rod license. To ensure you do not dehydrate after working hard catching plenty of fish there is cool bottled water and fruit (apple & banana) available during the session.
What happens if the weather is poor?
'Taster Fishing Sessions' will only be cancelled and rescheduled in the worst of conditions; for example heavy rain or very strong winds. Fishing is an outdoor hobby so therefore light rain or rain showers comes with the territory. However, I don't want your fishing experience to be a wet and miserable one therefore a gazebo shelter is set up at the coaching pool to provide shelter for our unpredictable weather.
